Lüderitz

Felsenkirche Church

Diamantberg

Description:

Despite being a very small port, Luderitz is the largest lobster fishing and oyster farming center in Africa and one of the must-see destinations in Namibia. It is here that a number of architectural landmarks associated with the foundation of the first German settlements in these parts are located. These include Felsenkirche – “Church on the Rock”.

It was built in 1912 when the city was still young - the Bremen tobacco trader Adolf Luderitz founded it in 1884. The name of this German Evangelical Lutheran church is due to the fact that it is located on the top of a rocky hill.

The building of the church with its skyward-looking architectural forms is a fine example of Victorian Gothic. Impressive stained glass windows and skillful wood carving, which can be safely attributed to brilliant examples of religious art of the early XX century. The window in the altar apse is a personal gift from the German Kaiser Wilhelm II, the last emperor of Germany.

The church is open from Monday to Saturday from 17:00.
