Namib Desert Dunes

Namibia

Description:

The Namib coastal desert is the oldest, formed in the era of dinosaurs. Its area exceeds 100,000 km2, stretching for 1900 kilometers along the Atlantic coast.

The sand in the Namib desert has a red hue due to its high iron content. The Namib Desert is very dry and practically uninhabited, except for a few coastal areas, however, the sand contains enough moisture for the survival of a few species of hardy plants.

Winds rushing into the desert covered a ridge of sand dunes with a length of 10 to 20 kilometers and a height of 60 to 240 meters. The dunes of the Namib desert are the highest and most picturesque in the world, almost all of them are named or numbered.

So, dune No. 7 is the highest, with a height of 383 meters, dune No. 45 is considered the most beautiful, and the Big Daddy dune is known for fringing the famous Dead Valley with the skeletons of dead trees, located in the center of the desert, near the clay plateau of Sossusflei.
