Canyon Sesreem
Description:
Cesriem Canyon is located in front of the entrance to Sossusflei. Thanks to the centuries-old work of water and wind, this miracle of nature was created. Its depth is in places up to 40 meters, and its length is 1 kilometer. When the rainy season comes, a lake forms at the bottom of the canyon. The name "Sesriem" canyon received from the local pioneers, who needed to tie six skins in order to get water from these lakes.
A small Namibian river called Tsauchab is the cause of this canyon. It prevents the sands of the Namib desert from filling the Sossuflei valley. And it is she, during the rainy season, fills the whole valley with water, giving life to the plant and animal world. But since this river is dry for most of the year, almost no one remembers it.
In the canyon itself you can go down the gently entrance, at its bottom there is not much space. In some places, the width does not reach 40 centimeters. In the walls of the canyon there are many niches, they have a round shape. According to local legends, these niches used Bushmen as a shelter from bad weather and a place to sleep. Who created the niches, the Bushmen themselves or nature, no one knows for sure.
