Swakopmund

Skeleton Coast National Park

Swakopmund, Namibia

Description:

The Skeleton Coast is called part of the coast of Namibia, located north of Swakopmund and ending in Angola at the mouth of the Kunene River. It is considered part of the Namib Desert. According to geological data, most of the crust of the Skeleton Coast is more than 1.5 billion years old.

The environmental zone of the National Nature Park "Skeleton Coast" occupies the northern part of the coast. The territory of the reserve begins from the Ugab River in the north and stretches for almost 500 km to the Kunene River, which borders Angola. The national park has an area of 16,000 km2 and is in contact in the west with the Kaokoweldu region.

The park is divided into two zones: north and south. The southern part of the reserve is freely accessible, but the northern part can only be visited by organized tourist groups that adhere to special rules and cannot stay here for the night.

In the northern part of the park, near the Goarusib River, there is a unique natural monument that you can not only see, but also hear, this is the Roaring Dunes of Terras Bay. The unique property of the sand included in their composition allows you to descend from the dunes on snowboard, but only with a certain direction and style of wind.
