Cape Cross Reserve
Namibia. 125 kilometers north of Swakopmund.
Description:
Cape Cross is a seal reserve located on a cape 125 kilometers north of Swakopmund. Every year 80-100 thousand seals gather here. Their shining bodies in the sun completely cover the rocks on the cape. There are approximately 15 colonies of eared seals off the coast of Namibia. Five of them are directly on the mainland and the rest are on nearby islands in the ocean.
According to experts, up to a million seals live here. About 30,000 young are born here every year. Jackals and hyenas often prey on baby seals, but this has little impact on their populations.
During the gestation period, females teach previously born babies to catch fish. Males in the love period surround themselves with huge harems of females. The best time to come here is November-December, during the peak mating season.
