Palace of 55 Windows

Bhaktapur 44800, Nepal

Description:

The palace of 55 windows was built by Yakshi Malla in the XV century. The building got its name thanks to 55 windows placed on the balcony, which is considered a real masterpiece of wood carving art. The palace was the official royal residence until 1769.

The Golden Gate, built by King Ranjit Malla, is the entrance to the main courtyard of the 55 windows. The gate is considered one of the most beautiful and ornate gates of this type in the world. The gate is decorated with demons and deities of unusually fine work. The gate features golden figures of Hanuman, Narasingh Narayan and Bhairava.

Now in the palace is the National Art Gallery with ancient examples of Buddhist and Hindu art (portraits of kings, stone sculptures, mandalas and tanks, ancient manuscripts, paintings). The gallery is open daily except Tuesday.
