Manakaman Mai Temple

Manakamana, Nepal

Description:

The temple is dedicated to the powerful goddess Manakaman (Shakti), the companion of the god Shiva, the protector of good and the destroyer of evil. Manakaman is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in Nepal.

Before the construction of the cable car in 1998 (the length of 2.8 kilometers), numerous pilgrims from Nepal and India (about 300 thousand people a year) climbed to the top of the mountain along a four-kilometer hiking trail, leading and carrying sacrificial animals and birds, fruits and rice for offerings to the great goddess.

Especially crowded in the temple during the celebration of the Navaratri festival, held during the Dasain festival, when religious ceremonies are performed for nine nights in honor of the nine incarnations of the goddess Durga, called collectively Nava Durga.
