ATOR is waiting for a new wave of card tourism

The Association of Tour Operators of Russia predicts a new wave of demand among Russians for traveling abroad to issue bank cards for Visa and MasterCard payment systems. This is due to the refusal to accept UnionPay cards and the problems with the exchange of old dollars, as reported in an interview with RIA Novosti Vice President of ATOR Arthur Muradyan.

In November, the United States imposed sanctions on Gazprombank and six of its foreign subsidiaries. After getting into the sanctions list of the US Treasury, Gazprombank warned its customers about possible problems with UnionPay cards abroad, and then sent a notice that from November 21 its cards were disconnected from this payment system.

“Many tourists used UnionPay cards extensively on their travels, as they were accepted in friendly countries, which was convenient. However, Russian tourists are able to adapt. We see that now there may be a new wave of card tourism to neighboring countries, Muradyan said.
