Air travel officially recognized as safe from coronavirus
The head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova said that the restoration of air traffic at this stage of the pandemic of coronavirus infection in the world is safe.
To the same conclusion about the safety of air travel in the pandemic coronavirus came researchers from the US Department of Defense.
According to Anna Popova, the Russian authorities know how to make sure that passengers do not become infected during the flight: “...And all the stages of cutting people off from infected people – I do not want to say patients – are already clear, known and, with clear execution, make traveling by plane absolutely safe.”
A study aboard United Airlines Boeing 777 and 767 aircraft found that using masks minimized the likelihood of infection, even if someone coughed in the next seat.
Approximately 99.99% of the potentially hazardous particles were removed from the cabin within six minutes thanks to rapid air circulation, downward ventilation systems and air filtration in the cabin.
On average, only 0.003% of air particles in the vicinity of the passenger are contagious, even if all seats in the cabin are occupied.
“According to the study, in order to get the coronavirus, a passenger would have to fly 54 hours in a cabin with an infected person.”
During the six months of the study, 300 tests were completed: 38 hours in the air and 45 hours on the ground. The tests were carried out by ejecting particles of the same size as the coronavirus across cabin sectors, each with 42 sensors simulating passengers who were suspected to be in contact with the virus particles.
In each trial, 180 million particles were released, as if thousands of people were coughing at the same time.
