Two Indonesian islands went under water due to rising sea levels

The islands of Bethet and Gundul in South Sumatra submerged a meter and three meters respectively.

According to scientists, the main cause of flooding is climate change and sea level rise. The islands were uninhabited and were part of the Berbak Sembilan National Park.

Authorities in the region are worried that the disappearance of the islands may continue: unless efforts are made to address the problem of rising ocean levels, four other islands in the area with altitudes less than 4 m above sea level may sink.

At risk is the island of Salah Namo at an altitude of 2 m above sea level. This area is now inhabited by people, and some islanders had to move inland due to flooding.
