Egypt opens: Putin cancels decree banning flights to Red Sea resorts
Charter flights to the Red Sea resorts of Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh were banned in November 2015 after a Russian plane exploded in the skies over Sinai.
In April 2018, air traffic with Egypt was resumed, but only regular flights between Moscow and Cairo were allowed later flights to Cairo from other cities of the Russian Federation.
In April 2021, Russian and Egyptian presidents Vladimir Putin and Abdelfattah al-Sisi agreed to resume flights.
The canceled decree imposed a ban on flights to the resorts of Egypt Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh after the explosion of a Russian airline plane over the Sinai Peninsula.
Putin’s decree cancels the recommendation to tour operators to refrain from selling tourist products to Egypt.
Tour operators are likely to open charters to Egypt in the autumn, when the country will enter the high tourist season.
