How will Mallorca and Ibiza deal with drunken tourism?

Deutsche Welle has declared war on the Balearic Islands on so-called drunken tourism.

More than 16 million holidaymakers come to the archipelago annually, and a significant number of holidaymakers spend time consuming relatively cheap alcohol.

The local administration believes that drunkenness worsens the crime situation and reduces the prestige of resorts, making them unattractive for family tourists.

Authorities imposed 5-year restrictions on the sale of alcohol in the resorts of the most popular islands of the archipelago: Mallorca (Playa de Palma, El Arenal and Magaluf) and Ibiza (Sante Antoni de Portmani).

Alcohol in local bars and shops will be available only from 8:00 to 21:30. Happy hours and alcohol advertising are also banned. In the Balearics canceled “balconing”: jumping into the pool from the balcony will be punished by a fine of 6000 to 60 000 EUR. From 60 to 60 000 EUR will be collected from drunken rows.
