When will tourism revive after the coronavirus?

The coronavirus epidemic in Russia is lagging behind China by about 2-2.5 months, from Europe by about 1 month.

According to the steps taken by air carriers and tourist business, domestic travel agencies and tourists can navigate their forecasts about the depth of the upcoming recession and the beginning of the recovery of demand for travel.

On March 16, British Airways announced plans to reduce the number of flights. In April-May, the group plans to reduce capacity by at least 75% compared to the same period in 2019.

Ryanair, Europe’s largest low-cost airline, has announced that it will land most of its fleet of airliners across Europe over the next seven to ten days. In April and May, Ryanair expects to reduce its capacity to 80%. Moreover, for these months, a complete shutdown of the airline’s activities in the most unfavorable scenario is not excluded.”

British carriers hint that if the coronavirus epidemic in Europe goes according to the Chinese scenario, then from June, a very slow revival of tourism will begin: first, it will affect business contacts - companies will resume contacts with their counterparties to restore ties destroyed by the coronavirus, and then ordinary holidaymakers tired of quarantine will reach the resorts.

However, British experts believe that the initial forecasts for the summer season can be forgotten - after all, after the end of the pandemic, not all potential tourists will have money for travel - many will lose their jobs during the crisis.
