Direct flights will be launched between Russia and Saudi Arabia
Flights from Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo airports are planned to be performed several times a week to Riyadh. This will make it easier for Russian tourists to travel to the kingdom and open up new options for connecting routes to other countries.
Following negotiations with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Saudi Arabia Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that the new flights will help increase tourist exchange and business ties between the countries. In 2024, Russians made more than 36 thousand trips to Saudi Arabia, and the tourist flow in the opposite direction increased six times compared to 2023.
Sheremetyevo Airport has added flights between Moscow and Riyadh to its schedule. Saudia Airlines plans to operate five flights a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Arrival at Terminal C of Sheremetyevo Airport is scheduled for 15:00, departure to Saudi Arabia at 16:30. Tickets to Saudia have not yet gone on sale.
What will give the opening of air traffic
Russian tourists, pilgrims and businessmen will be able to get to Saudi Arabia on regular direct flights without transfers. Now to travel to Riyadh, a major air hub Ed-Dammam or popular among tourists Jeddah is required to make transfers, most often in Istanbul, Antalya, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Baku or Manama.
Saudi airports are major hubs, opening up ample opportunities for further transfer flights. With the launch of direct flights, new routes to Southeast Asia, Europe and America will become available to Russians. Dubai and Istanbul will have a new competitor in the long-haul market.
Saudi Arabia has been open to mass foreign tourism since 2019. Previously, the country attracted mainly pilgrims for hajj to Mecca and Medina, for which charter flights were organized from Russia. In recent years, the kingdom, following the example of the UAE and Qatar, has actively held sports competitions, business events, exhibitions and summits, seeking to attract foreign visitors.
