China asks not to trust rumors about coronavirus

Hua Chunying, the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said that China adheres to an open and responsible approach to the situation with the spread of the 2019-nCoV coronavirus and is quickly sharing information.

Some media have questioned whether the Chinese authorities are providing accurate statistics on the number of victims and those infected. Senior WHO expert John McKenzie accused Beijing of delaying reporting cases in the city of Wuhan at the beginning of the outbreak.

We have noticed some rumors and lies around the situation that are worse than the virus itself. You may have noticed that the WHO Director-General recently reiterated his hope that all parties will not believe the rumors and spread them.

In some countries, relevant government agencies are also already making efforts to hold accountable those who fabricate and spread rumors.

Chunying reports that the State Health Committee of China and the Health Committee of Wuhan City hold daily briefings and provide current information.

“China’s responsible attitude, openness and transparency, and strong and serious measures to combat the spread of the disease have been recognized by the entire international community.”

Late last year, Chinese authorities reported an outbreak of pneumonia of unknown origin in the city of Wuhan, Hubei province. The causative agent of the disease - coronavirus - 2019-nCoV.
