New road between Thailand and Malaysia: border closer for tourists

10 July 2026 Prime Ministers Thailand and Malaysia A new road connecting the two countries was officially opened. The route connected the key border points - Sadao (Songkhla province, Thailand) and Bukit Kayu Hitam (Kedah state, Malaysia).

The main advantage of the project for travelers is the separation of tourist and freight transport flows. This will significantly reduce the time of crossing the border: tourists will be able to save up to 2-3 hours, which used to go to wait in common queues with trucks.

Land trips between countries will become much more comfortable. For example, the bus route from Kuala Lumpur to Phuket or Krabi will become a convenient and budget alternative to air travel. Rented travelers will also benefit: the new border crossing will save them from having to understand difficult road junctions.

The opening of the route opens up opportunities for new combined routes – now it will be much easier for tourists to include the locations of both countries in one trip.
