French Parliament to discuss lifting sanctions against Russia on April 28
Individual sanctions against individuals are now in force, the EU extended until September 15, 2016, sectoral restrictive measures (until July 31), and sanctions against Crimea (until June 23).
The proposal to discuss the topic of lifting sanctions came from a group of Republicans led by Thierry Mariani, RIA Novosti reports, citing parliamentarian Francois Rochebloin. However, he did not specify what sanctions were in question.
“If the Assembly makes such a decision, it will show the position of France,” he said.
In March, Thierry Mariani said he intends to ask the French authorities to make a sovereign decision to end anti-Russian sanctions, which, according to him, have shown their ineffectiveness, they are “almost murderous” for the economy of France and Russia.
Earlier in April, French Senate President Gerard Larchet said during a working visit to Moscow that France is ready to contribute to the preparation of a decision to lift sanctions against Russia, which will be discussed at the EU summit in late June and early July.
The World Bank’s Long Road to Economic Recovery report suggests that sanctions against Russia will remain in place until 2018. This, in his opinion, will not have a strong impact on the economy.
At the same time, the rise in oil prices, experts believe, will have a much more favorable impact on the country's economy.
Relations between Russia and the West have deteriorated over the situation in Ukraine. In late July 2014, the EU and the US imposed sanctions on Russian politicians and businessmen, as well as a number of defense and commodity companies and state banks. Russia responded to the sanctions and limited the import of food products, and in June 2015, following the EU, extended the food embargo until August 5, 2016.
