A visit to Venice will be paid

The municipality of Venice is preparing new rules for visiting the city to reduce the number of day trips.

According to authorities, despite the pandemic, about 100,000 tourists visit Venice every day.

It is possible that in a few weeks it will be impossible to freely enter the historical center of Venice. The exact date of the launch of tickets for entry to Venice is not known. But Italian media do not rule out that the pilot experiment will begin in February, when the traditional Venice Carnival will be held.

Tourists will be able to visit the city after booking online tickets for 5 euros, which will be valid for one day. You can enter the city once.

"The goal is to discourage day tourism tiring and straining the city, and instead encourage more meaningful tourism," says the city's deputy mayor, Simone Venturini.

Everything is ready for the launch of the paid entrance to Venice: checkpoints are equipped at the entrances to the city center. The flow of visitors will be monitored around the clock by 500 cameras installed around the perimeter of the historical center. The authorities are ready for the fact that there will be “illegal tourists” – those who want to stay in Venice longer.

Tourists who do not leave the city on time will be detected using cameras and data from mobile phones. The police promised to expel the violators.
