Turkey introduces ‘residence tax’
In the tourism industry Turkey There will be a new tax - "tax on residence", which will cover all accommodation facilities.
Experts say that this tax is not analogous to the “tourist tax” or “ overnight tax” that is accepted in Europe.
The tax is not aimed at the tourist: its payers are accommodation facilities (hotels, motels, apartments, guest houses, campsites).
Hotels will pay such a tax on the price of guest accommodation and on other services: food, swimming pool, SPA, conferences, entertainment.
The tax will come into force on April 1, 2020. Until the end of 2020, its rate is 1% of the total cost of services provided to the guest. In 2021, accommodation facilities will have to pay 2% of the cost of services to the national budget.
The final word on the tax issue belongs to President Erdogan, who can reduce or increase the tax rate three times.
The tax "surprise" from the Ministry of Finance of Turkey was criticized by hoteliers. The Federation of Hoteliers of the country (TUROFED) notes that the sector is obliged to pay contributions to the budget of the Agency for Tourism Development.
Hotels are facing constant increases in food and energy prices, which also reduces business margins.
The problem of Turkish hoteliers is aggravated by the fact that contract prices for 2020 have been announced, and some tour operators have put up for sale hotels for next summer. Those who have not yet put their numbers on sale have the opportunity to put a new fee in the price.
In 2021, the “accommodation tax” will include all hotels in contracting, which will increase prices for tourists by at least 2%.
