The introduction of border controls in the Schengen area is unacceptable, says the head of the European Parliament
The possible introduction of border controls at the internal borders of the Schengen area affects the fundamental rights of Europeans. This was stated today by the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz.
“The European Parliament will vigorously oppose any attempt to curtail the fundamental freedoms of European citizens,” Schulz said. Almost all political groups of the European Parliament sharply criticized the decision taken last week by the EU Council regarding the so-called new mechanism for assessing the situation on the internal borders of Schengen. The German MP called unacceptable the proposed measures that will allow national authorities in case of urgent need to restore passport control between the parties to the Schengen agreements for six months to one year.
“We have witnessed unilateral changes to the EU legal framework,” Schulz said.
Strasbourg is also outraged by the EU Council’s proposal to deprive MEPs of the opportunity to take part in assessing the effectiveness of the Schengen legislation and amending it.
