Will Chernobyl Exclusion Zone Open to Tourists?
President Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke about the start of the process to turn Chernobyl into a tourist destination and “the growth point of the new Ukraine.”
The “Green Corridor” will be opened in Ivankovo district (Kyiv region) for legal visitors to the territory near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
Information about such a project was reported by Vladimir Zelensky on Twitter. Thus, the authorities will fight corruption and taxes on tourists.
Unfortunately, the exclusion zone still remains a symbol of corruption - security forces rob tourists, illegally exported scrap metal and use natural resources. We will stop all this soon.”
In the spring of 2019, the series Chernobyl (HBO) about the Chernobyl disaster was released. Interest in the disaster has increased, and according to Chernobyl Exclusive Tours and local guide Stas Polessky, tourist flow to the exclusion zone increased by 30% compared to the same period in 2018.
