W National Park

West Africa, Karimama, Benin

Description:

National Park of Nigeria has an unusual name "W", which appeared because of the peculiar shape of the bend of the river, which resembles this letter. The park was established in 1954 to stop the invasion of the desert from the north. Today, these waterlands are protected by UNESCO as an object of world importance. At first glance, it may seem that the entire national park is a brown endless savannah, but this is not at all true.

The landscape of the park is a savannah, turning into wetlands near the Niger River. Here on the islands of greenery in the natural environment live elephants and hippos, numerous species of antelopes and buffaloes. Recently, a small population of cheetahs and servals appeared here. The main pride of the park is the West African giraffe, of which there are about 200 in the world and most live in zoos. In Park W, they can be seen in the natural environment and with offspring. Park W is home to more than 350 species of native birds and about 200 more come from other regions depending on the season.

The best way to get acquainted with the wildlife is a safari tour, as it is forbidden to enter the park without a guide. The best time to visit the savannah is from December to April, when all nature blooms.
