The Tenere Desert

Niger, Tenere Desert

Description:

Tenere Desert, located in the northeastern part of Niger, covers an area of 400,000 square kilometers. The boundary of the desert are the Aires Mountains in the west, the Hoggar Mountains in the north, the Tibetsi Highlands in the east and the Lake Chad Basin in the south.

Translated from the Tuareg language, the word “tenere” means “desert”, but it was not always sandstone. Most of the territory is in the past. This is the bottom of the vast prehistoric Lake Chad and later the rainforest. The fact that this place was more fertile land, evidenced by the finds of many fossils, as well as the bones of dinosaurs.

The central part of the desert occupies a number of low dunes, the corridors of which serve as transport routes. The air temperature during the day reaches 42 ° C, the climate is arid, very hot and dry, water is almost impossible to find even underground, so numerous wells scattered throughout the desert are often empty. By 2500 BC, the desert had acquired the appearance we see today. The territory of this land is almost deserted, the only settlement that hides in the depths of sandstorms is the sonorous name of Fachi.
