The Kurmi Market

Kofar Wambai, Kano, Nigeria

Description:

Kurmi Market is one of the largest and oldest markets in Africa. It was founded by King Kano Muhammad Rumfa in the XV century. The last extensive reconstruction and modernization of Kurmi took place in 2001.

The market is located in the “old city” and is a maze of narrow streets where friendly traders offer a wide range of goods, including groceries, jewelry, household goods, clothing and shoes. Here you can find almost everything, the main thing is to be patient. The market is in demand for European goods that can be bought or exchanged for domestic ones. They come to Kano from North Africa through trans-Saharan trade.

Very popular among tourists are souvenir shops, which present African masks, statuettes, beaded jewelry, calabashes and ceramics. You can relax and enjoy exotic dishes of African cuisine in one of the many cafes.
