Lake Nicaragua

Lake Nicaragua, San Juan River, Nicaragua

Description:

This lake is unique in that it no longer exists reservoirs with freshwater reserves throughout Latin America. In addition, there are animals that you will not see in other fresh waters. The maximum depth of the lake is 70 meters, and the entire area is 8600 square meters. The surface of Lake Nicaragua is 32 meters above sea level and borders Costa Rica.

Lake Nicaragua is connected to the Caribbean Sea by the navigable San Juan River. Fresh water comes from many rivers and streams. The most abundant of them is the Tipipipa, which flows from Lake Managua.

According to scientists, the reservoir was formed on the site of the ancient Pacific Gulf. After the loss of connection, the depressions and oceans formed the same lake that can be seen today. But despite this, the connection with the past remained. It manifests itself in unique fish that live in a fresh lake. They are called the sharks of Lake Nicaragua. Nowhere in fresh water can you find such inhabitants as in this one. This shark is a relative of the gray bull shark.

This type of shark easily adapts to desalination of water and successfully enters the mouths of rivers. Individuals of this inhabitant of Lake Nicaragua reach a decent size and pose a serious danger to people. Nevertheless, the lake remains attractive for tourists coming to the country from different countries.
