St. John's Church
Description:
St. John's Church is located in the multicultural, international part of the city centre of Bergen, Norway. It is designed for 1,250 seats. Architect Herman Bunker.
The church is located on Sydneyshaugen, with a longitudinal northeast-southwest axis. The organ is located in the southwest, and the tower and the main building are located in the northeast, towards the city. The tower thus became the dominant western terminus for one of the city's most important axes.
The church is built in the neo-Gothic style of glazed brick on a granite base. Inside, the masonry is plastered and painted white with horizontal stripes of blue, yellow and red. In the northeast it is a square tower 61 m high on four floors, surrounded by small stair towers.
The walls of the tower protrude on each floor and end with pointed pediments, on which there is a pointed octagonal helmet covered with copper, with light sheets. The steps outside are on display.
The altar features a painting by Marcus Grenwald in 1894, often referred to as “Christ in Prayer.”
