Monolith in Vigelanda Park

Oslo, Norway

Description:

The monolith in Vigeland Park is the central sculpture of the park ensemble. It is also one of Norway’s most unusual and mysterious sculptures. The weight of the monolith is 470 tons. Its height is 121 meters, and its width is 14.12 meters. Such an unusual monument can be interpreted as a constant desire for God or an endlessly repeated cycle of life, but everyone sees the monument in his own way.

If we describe the monolith without higher material ideas, then the naked bodies of women, men and children rise majestically before the gaze of a person. The famous sculptor Gustav Vigeland interpreted the monolith as a myth of fantasy in the form of stone figures depicting life. Work on such a famous monument took the sculptor more than twenty years. All the figures of the monolith are carved out of one large piece of stone.
