Roosevelt Monument

Oslo, Norway

Description:

A granite sculpture of President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945) is located near the Akershus Fortress in Oslo. It was inaugurated on June 7, 1950 by the president's widow Eleanor Roosevelt. The monument was funded by a nationwide fundraiser to express gratitude to the United States for Norway’s assistance during and after the war. The sculpture, created by Steenius Fredriksen, depicts a firm and unwavering figure that fits well with the image of the president who led the United States through World War II.

An interesting fact says that the nose of the sculpture shattered in the spring of 2016. The Oslo Municipal Administration of Culture (Kulturetaten) was notified, but before they could fix the nose, it was torn off and disappeared.
