Strait of Hormuz

Washing the shores of the Musandam Peninsula

Description:

The length of the strait is 195 kilometers, and the width of its narrowest place is 54 kilometers. The strait was divided into two traffic flows of 2.5 kilometers each, between which lies a five-kilometer buffer zone.

To date, the Strait of Hormuz is the only sea route that allows the export of gas and oil from Arab countries, which is why it has always been the subject of disputes between the United States and Iran. In fact, they have something to argue about, as according to the Maritime Statistics Division in 2006, 33% of world oil exports passed through the strait.

The subject of dispute is the origin of the name of the strait. Some scholars believe that it came from the name of the Persian god Hormuz. Others say that "Ormuz" comes from the Persian word "Hur-mogh", which translates as "date palm". This assumption takes place, because some of the locals still call this strait Hormuz.
