Sultan Qaboos Mosque

As Sultan Qaboos St, 1, Muscat, Oman

Description:

In 1992, Sultan Qaboos decided that his country should have its own Grand Mosque. In this regard, a competition was held in Oman among architects who had to submit their sketches of the future temple. The construction began after 3 years, it lasted more than six years.

This building is a little more than 20 years old, but, nevertheless, it is made in the traditional Arab style. The main prayer hall has a square shape with a central dome rising to a height of 50. It took 300,000 tons of Indian sandstone to build. In addition to the size of the mosque, everyone is amazed by the huge handmade Persian carpet in the prayer hall – it weighs 21 tons.

The most notable architectural elements of the mosque are the main and four side minarets. To perform prayers, believers can be located both in the main prayer hall and in the outer prayer area. In total, they can accommodate up to 20,000 believers.

This mosque is allowed to visit tourists, but subject to certain rules. First of all, they should not interfere with prayer. Secondly, they should be accompanied by a guide. Muslims can visit the mosque at any time, but tourists belonging to other religious denominations can only enter it at certain times. Women will have to wear long clothes to enter.
