Hajar Mountains

Oman, Hajar Mountains

Description:

The Hajar Mountains are located in the Sultanate of Oman, in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula. The mountain range serves as a natural boundary between two climatic zones of Oman – a coastal plain and an arid region with a pronounced continental climate.

The road between the coast and the inland territories passes through the Wadi Samail gorge, dividing the ridge into the eastern and western parts. The highest point of the Hajar mountain system is Mount Jebel-Akhdar with a height of just over 3 kilometers, located in the western part of the mountain system. From west to east, the height of the ridge gradually decreases. In the valleys called “wadi”, small freshwater streams flow, filled with mountain runoff and rainwater.

Unlike most of Oman, which is a desert, the mountainous climate in the Hajar Ridge is relatively temperate. The valleys are rich in vegetation, among which palm trees and shrubs predominate. Since the mountainous areas are poorly populated, there are preserved populations of the Arabian tour, the Arabian leopard and other rare animals.
