Fort Nizwa
Description:
If you’re lucky enough to visit Nizwa, one of Oman’s oldest cities, or if you’re just planning a trip there, be sure to visit one of the main attractions – a beautiful fort built in the early 17th century. It is a massive fortified structure that was designed to protect the sultans of the Al-Yaruba clan. From its top opens magnificent picturesque landscapes. The interior of the building can please tourists with skillful wood carving and painted ceilings. The most powerful building of the fort is the citadel, which was built for about 12 years. The giant tower has a height of about 27 meters and the diameter of its base is 50 meters. In ancient times, the fort combined two functions – prisons and government buildings.
The material for the construction of the fort was stone and saruj – special burned bricks, which are made of clay mixed with pieces of palm wood. In 1988, a major restoration of the structure was carried out. There are many secret tunnels and passages in the fortress, but they are not shown to tourists. You can admire the appearance of the building and visit several rooms specially equipped for visiting.
