Oh. Coral Sea Islands

The Coral Sea Islands are the outer territory of Australia. A group of small tropical islands and reefs in the Coral Sea. The area of the sea area occupied by the islands is 780 thousand km2. The land area is less than 10 km2.

The islands are east and south of the Great Barrier Reef (Herald and Bacon Islands, Osprey Reefs, Willis Islands and 15 other reef and island groups).

In the XVIII-XIX centuries, the islands were dangerous for navigators, and at the bottom of the Coral Sea there are many dead ships. In 1921, a meteorological station was installed on the islands.

In 1969, Australia declared the islands its territory. The reefs of Leahow, Coring, Elizabeth, Middleton Sailor are recognized as national reserves of Australia. On the only inhabited island of Willis live employees of the weather station (work on a rotational basis).
