Panama

Old Panama City Day

Description:

Only numerous ruins of buildings of the XIV-XV centuries have survived to this day.
On August 15, 1519, the first Spanish colony was founded on the Pacific coast. Nowadays, the XVI century reminds of itself by the ancient ruins of the city destroyed by sea pirates. This protected historical part of the capital is called Old Panama or Panama Viejo, in 1997 it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The old city - Panama Viejo - had a layout in the form of a rectangular grid and an unusual mixture of different styles - Spanish, French and nascent American. To this day, only numerous ruins of buildings of the XIV-XV centuries have survived. However, the square tower of Catedral Viejo ("old cathedral"), the university, powerful walls and fortifications built to protect against pirate raids, the monasteries of Santo Domingo and San Francisco, the churches of San Jose, La Compagna de Jesús and La Concepción, the ruins of La Merced Monastery, the Royal Bridge, as well as several churches of the XVII-XVIII centuries, are surprisingly well preserved.
