Architectural and park complex Kalvaria-Zebzhidovsk

Poland, Malopolska Voivodeship, Vadovitska Povyat, town of Kalvaria-Zebzhidovska

Description:

The architectural and park complex of Kalvaria-Zebzhidovska is located in the town of the same name in the central part of Poland. The buildings of the complex are located at the foot of the Tatras, in an elliptical park. The park is about four square kilometers in French style, reflecting the main trends in the architecture and park art of its era.

The architectural ensemble of the complex combines a number of buildings symbolizing the passions of Christ and the path of the cross. Construction began in 1600 under the direction of an architect invited from Belgium. The complex was built in the popular style of mannerism at the time. After 1772, as a result of one of the divisions of Poland, the territory on which the complex was located was ceded to Austria. Conducting religious rites was stopped and resumed here only in 1947.

The complex was visited by Benedict XVI and his predecessor John Paul II, who enjoys great respect and popularity in Poland. After the death of the latter, his statue was installed at the entrance to the Basilica of the Virgin Mary.
