Mariatsky Cathedral
Description:
The Mariatsky Cathedral, which lasted half a century and was completed in 1397 under the direction of the architect Mykolaj Werner, is the main cathedral of Krakow.
It is a three-nave basilica in the Gothic style, which is the third in a row on this site. The previous cathedral was destroyed during the Mongol-Tatar raid in 1241. The north tower is topped with a high spire that grows out of a gilded crown, and the south with a low Renaissance helmet.
Inside the cathedral you can see the interior decorated with an abundance of paintings, sculptures and stained glass, made in styles from Gothic and Baroque to Art Nouveau. And, of course, the treasure of the temple is the altar by Vita Stvosh, made by him in the second half of the 15th century. The altar is a recognized masterpiece of late Gothic with Renaissance elements.
