The monument to Adam Mickiewicz is located on the Old Market Square. The monument was inaugurated in 1898 in honor of the anniversary of the great Polish poet of the 19th century, who had a significant influence on the literature of Eastern Europe. The author of the monument is the Polish sculptor Theodor Rygier.
The statue is set on a high granite pedestal. Four allegorical figures are depicted on the four sides of the pedestal: Poetry, Science, Homeland, Valor.
The monument is considered a symbol of the independence of the Polish people. In 1940 it was destroyed by fascist invaders. The sculpture was taken to Hamburg, where it lay in a scrap metal warehouse until 1955. Then the monument was placed in place and successfully restored. Today it is a bright sight of Krakow.
