Monument to Pope John Paul II
Krakow Archbishop's Palace courtyard, 3 Franciszkanska street, Old Town, Krakow, Poland
Description:
The monument to Pope John Paul II in Krakow is one of the results of the so-called “pope cult”, which arose due to the close connection of John Paul II with the city.
Back in 1938, he came to Krakow to study at the Polonistics Faculty at the local Jagiellonian University. However, with the beginning of the war, they had to stop studying and go to work. Later, in 1942, he entered the Krakow Theological Seminary and became famous even then for his fiery speeches.
John Paul II did not break his ties with Krakow even after his election as pope, repeatedly visiting the city and maintaining contacts. The date of his last visit to the city is considered the summer of 2002.
The monument to Pope John Paul II was erected in the courtyard of the Palace of Bishops, located near the Square of All Saints.
