Peskov Castle Rock

Pieskowa Ska1a, Gmina Su1oszowa

Description:

The castle in the Sand Rock was built in the XIV century by Casimir the Great and is currently the only surviving estate in Poland, functioning as a museum. There are exhibits of the medieval era, as well as cultural achievements of the XVI - XVIII centuries.

The castle was created as a fortress and was part of a defensive system designed to protect both the state border and trade routes. Because of its location, it is virtually inaccessible. Located on the mountain and surrounded on three sides by rocks, the fortress served as an ideal security post.

As a result of wars and other turbulent historical events, the interior of the castle and private collections of the owners have not been preserved, and all exhibits on display now belong to the Wawel Royal Castle.

The museum acquired its modern appearance only in 2000 and now consists of four halls. The first is dedicated to the Middle Ages, the second - the art of the XVI century, the third - XVII, and in the last hall exhibits of the late XVII - early XVIII century.
