The northern part of the lake is much deeper and if the average depth of water in the lake is about 10 meters, in the north it reaches 44 meters.
The lake was formed in its present borders by the XVII century, when the water level rose several meters. Several Prussian settlements remained underwater, including churches and cemeteries.
