Poznan fortress

Poland, Poznan

Description:

Poznan fortress is located in the city of the same name in the west of Poland. Built in the XIX - early XX century, the fortress is considered the third largest complex of defensive structures on the European continent.

In the center of the complex is a citadel, and at some distance from the center were built 18 forts, forming a ring of fortifications. During the German occupation there was a concentration camp where 20,000 Poles were killed. Currently, the Museum of the Martyrs of Great Poland Fort VII is founded here.

The construction of the citadel began in 1828, and since 1876, 18 defensive forts were built. The Varta River divided the outer ring of fortifications into two parts. The forts were connected to each other and to the main citadel by a network of ring and radial roads.

After the First World War, some defensive fortifications were demolished. Currently, memorial parks and museums have been created in various objects of the defensive complex.
