Gdanisco - Toilet Tower

d. Torun, Poland

Description:

Gdanisco is a toilet tower in the medieval Polish town of Torun. This tower is the only surviving building of the castle of the knights of the Teutonic Order. This tower was nothing but a public toilet for the inhabitants of the castle, the building was usually built away from the palace chambers, and led to a long passage from the castle. The construction of the toilet tower dates back to the beginning of the XIII century.

This is the only surviving building of the medieval castle of the knights of the Teutonic Order. Construction of the castle began in 1236, the complex was shaped like a horseshoe. In 1454, the castle was conquered and destroyed by the inhabitants of the city, so to this day only the "Gdanisco" - a toilet tower located somewhat away from the main buildings of the castle - has survived. By the way, the Old Town of Torun, where this tower is located, is included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List as an architectural monument of the Middle Ages, preserved to this day.
