Benedictine monastery of Sacramentoc

Poland, Warsaw, New Town, 2

Description:

The Benedictine monastery of Sacramentok is part of the church complex of Warsaw, it was built in 1668-1692 on the orders of Queen Maria Sobieska and her husband. This temple is considered one of the most valuable architectural buildings in Warsaw. In addition, it is one of the most original, as it was built in the form of a Greek cross.

The monastery is a magnificent example of the Baroque style, and the building was designed by the leading Polish-Dutch architect Tilman Hamerski. To this day, the building is considered one of the greatest works of the architect. The main building has the shape of an octagon, to which 4 equal rectangular buildings are attached. The central building is covered with a dome with a lantern. If you look at the building from above, you can visually see the Greek cross.

During the war, the temple became a refuge for the inhabitants of the city, and for a short time worked as a field hospital. Only from 1948 to 1952, a complete reconstruction of the building took place. The re-consecration of the temple took place only in 1973. Now on the terraces behind the monastery there is a beautiful garden descending to the Vistula. Fortunately, during the war the garden was perfectly preserved. During Mass, on the second Sunday of each month, the Gregorian Choral is performed and Mass is served in Latin.
