Warsaw

Saxon garden

Poland, Warsaw.

Description:

Saxon Garden is an old park in the center of Warsaw, it can be found between Marshalkowska Street and Pilsudski Square.

This small park was founded in the late 17th century, but for all residents of the city opened only thirty years later. The garden, located on the "Saxon Axis" (a line of parks and palaces on the outskirts of Warsaw) was presented to the people by King Augustus II the Strong.

Not unlike the rest of the royal parks of the time of construction, the Saxon Garden was built in the Versailles style, decorated with allegorical sculptures and an artificial lake. The shape of the reservoir is a copy of the Roman sanctuary of Vesta. On the central alley there are 21 sandstone statues, the alley ends with a picturesque fountain and a sundial.

The palace near the park was destroyed in the Second World War. From his arcade, only a fragment of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier remains. Under the surviving arches and now there is an Eternal Flame, near which the guard changes every day.
