New Market Square

ooh Piedarska and Svetoszchansk, Warsaw

Description:

The New Market Square was built around 1408 for the city of New Warsaw, which was founded at this time. Initially, the square had a rectangular shape, and on it stood the City Hall. Today the square is decorated with a cast-iron well, installed here in 1958.

The New Market Square in Warsaw was formed at the turn of the XIII and XIV centuries. Until the XVIII century it was the main square of the city, where, in addition to trade, there were city meetings, public punishments at the pole of shame and even the execution of criminals. In the center of the square stood the Town Hall, the main legislative body of medieval Warsaw. In 1817, the town hall was demolished and now there is a fountain in its place.

Initially, the construction of the New Market Square was mainly wooden. In 1607, a fire broke out in Warsaw, destroying most of the city’s homes. After this event, the mayor issued a decree allowing only stone houses to be built in the city center. The buildings built on the square at that time stood until World War II. Those buildings that can be seen on the square of the New Market in Warsaw in our time – is an accurate reconstruction of ancient buildings, made in the second half of the XX century. Old photographs and drawings were used to restore them.
