Oh. Ak-Dovurak

Ak-Dovurak is a city in Russia, republican subordination in Barun-Khemchik district of Tuva.

Population of 13,600 (2006).

The city is located in the west of the Tuvan basin, on the left bank of the Khemchik River (left tributary of the Yenisei), in the center of the Khemchik Valley, 301 km west of Kyzyl.

The name of the city is translated from Tuvan as “white land”. It is associated with the deposit of asbestos, which is told in the Tuvan legend: “In ancient times, kind and brave people lived here, they raised and herded cattle. But one day they were attacked by fierce warriors. Three days and three nights brave men fought the enemy until the last warrior fell. The surviving elderly, widows and children were ordered to be burned on a high mountain top. The earth was blackened with grief, and the heart of a good people turned into an eternal stone - asbestos.
