Railroad Day

Description:

Russian Railways
The history of this holiday is associated with the name of Emperor Nicholas I, who is rightly called the “founder of railway business in Russia”. It was during his reign that the construction of railways began in our country.

Therefore, since 1886, it was decided to annually celebrate the Day of the Railwayman on July 8, the day of the name of Nicholas I. On this day, the workers of all the steel highways converging in St. Petersburg gathered for a friendly dinner at Pavlovsk railway station. This tradition was observed until 1917. The Bolsheviks who came to power canceled a significant day for railway workers.

After the October Revolution, the Day of the Railwayman was not remembered for almost 20 years. The tradition resumed only in 1937. According to the decree of the CEC of the USSR of June 28, 1937, the holiday was decided to be held annually on the first Sunday of August.
