World AIDS Day
Description:
The epidemic of HIV infection and AIDS is the largest event of the twentieth century, which can be put on a par with the two world wars, both in terms of the number of victims and the damage it causes to society.
Several decades ago, the world learned about the existence of a new incurable disease – acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Unparalleled financial and intellectual efforts have been expended over the years to combat this disease, but the world community has so far suffered a crushing defeat in this war.
Various research centers and large pharmaceutical companies have been engaged in research in the field of vaccines and AIDS drugs for about 20 years. So far, however, no decisive breakthrough has been achieved. In the early 90s, it was believed that doctors would learn to treat AIDS after 2000, by the end of the 90s this period shifted to the 2010th year.
Now most experts believe that life-saving vaccines should be expected, most likely, only in the next decade. Still, optimistic reports of midterm victories have been coming in almost daily lately. The hope is that people will destroy HIV before it kills humanity.
