Alexandro-Osheven Monastery

Russia, Arkhangelsk region, Kargopol district, Pogost village.

Description:

This monastery was founded around the 1460s by the Monk Alexander Oshevensky, who originally built a small desert among the wild forest. Then the St. Nicholas Church was erected, and after the death of the monk, another church was built in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin and the monastery possessions were expanded.

Then the monastery buildings burned several times, but in the end the monastery was restored again, already building stone buildings. The relics of St. Alexander Oshevensky were kept as a shrine. To this day, the white-stone Assumption Cathedral with the limit of the Meeting of the Lord, a beautiful bell tower, the gated Nikolsky temple have been preserved. On the territory of the monastery, you can see miraculously preserved buildings of the XVII-XIX centuries: the Holy Gate, corner towers and buildings in the style of a provincial empire.

At the beginning of the XX century in the monastery there were 8 people of the brethren and there was an established economy. In addition, the Alexandro-Oshensky Monastery had its own compound in St. Petersburg with a small chapel in honor of St. Panteleimon.

But the Soviet hardship of the XX century did not spare this monastery. In 1922, the monastery was looted and closed, even opened a cancer with the relics of the Saint. All the monastic buildings were used for economic needs. Only since 2001 began to gradually revive the monastery: the reconstruction of St. Nicholas Gate Church, the restoration of cells, the construction of a Sunday school.
