Antonie-Sii Monastery
Description:
Antoniev-Siysky Monastery is an Orthodox male monastery located on the shore of the Big Mikhailovsky Lake, near Arkhangelsk. The monastery is known for its ancient history and is one of the main cult attractions of the region.
The Antoniev-Siysky Monastery was founded in 1520 by Orthodox hieromonk Anthony of Siysk. Since its foundation, the monastery has become the largest center of Christian development in the north. In the seventeenth century, it contained the boyar Feodor Romanov, the future Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, who also became the founder of the Romanov dynasty.
Until the twentieth century, the Antoniev-Siysky Monastery flourished - a cathedral was built on its territory, and the religious library was considered one of the largest in Russia. However, soon after the revolution, the monastery was closed and disbanded, and its lands were given to the collective farms. Restoration of the monastery began only in 1992.
Today, the Antoniev Siysky Monastery is a shrine for all Orthodox Christians. Every year this place is visited by more than five thousand pilgrims from Russia and abroad.
